Challenges, Legacy and Achievements

Throughout its history, capoeira was really discriminated. Prohibited in law under the 1890 Penal Code and legalized in 1937, spread all over Brazil and, later, over the world. Today, being practiced in more than 150 countries along the 5 continents.

Because of the rigid pursuit imposed by the 1890 Penal Code this art got into a "forgetfulness" phase along the Brazilian history, being marginalized by the society, specially because what meant the Maltas and Bandos in the late monarchy period.

After the 1930 political coup, Getúlio Vargas see in Capoeira a way to affirm the real Brazilian Cultural Identity, what was very important in that time of transition. So capoeira, in 1937, becomes a legal practice. Since Mestre Bimba with his Regional style and later, Mestre Pastinha with Angola, capoeira becomes more organized, leaving the streets getting the academies (training centers). That was the greatest legacy of these masters, the organization, because without it capoeira wouldn't have gotten such visibility and, probably, would have disappeared.

The next generation, after Bimba e Pastinha, was the greatest responsible for the spreading of capoeira throughout Brazil and the World. This generation's capoeiristas built big groups and got more organized. Another important fact is that they got Angola and Regional closer, before them capoeiristas either used to play Angola or Regional.

However, the grown and spreading of capoeira was the cause of some disagreements. Some groups can't meet each other on the streets that will soon begin the punches and kicks. A public demonstration of violence, the main reason why capoeira is still marginalized for some people. Whether in the past, people external from the capoeira's world used to blurry its image, today the problem is inner.

To keep and preserve the group's identity and values is essential, but it's necessary to understand that capoeira itself is bigger than any single group. It's important to figure out that this conflict gets capoeira weaker and goes against its entire ideals.

Therefore, if Bimba and Pastinhas' generation was responsible for the redemption of capoeira and its organization, the following generation provided to capoeira to conquer the world. The new generation, that has emerged, gets as a challenge to promote the union between the different groups in order to a even bigger purpose, the Capoeira itself, because that's the only way to make capoeira grow even more and gets more field before the society.
